Dream Job or Wishful Thinking

Ever applied for a dream job and ended up feeling utterly disheartened when you didn’t hear back? It’s a common story – imagining yourself in the perfect role, only to be let down. But let’s face it: no job advertised is truly a perfect fit. Every role, no matter how appealing, comes with aspects beyond what meets the eye. In today’s competitive market, it’s important to expand your search and approach. That job you overlooked might just be the ideal opportunity you need right now. So, how can we overcome this disappointment and find the right (not necessarily perfect) fit?

Here are some key tips from my 20+ years in HR and recruitment:

Ditch the ‘Dream Job’ Myth:  No job is perfect! Focus on finding a good fit, not the perfect match, that aligns with your skills and values. Evaluating each opportunity objectively can lead to a better match and less disappointment.

Look Beyond the Job Listing: Job postings aren’t always an accurate reflection of the role.  Many are vague and outdated. Use them as guides, not gospel. Focus on your capabilities and willingness to learn.

Explore Unconventional Job Channels: Not all opportunities are on job sites. In fact it is estimated that only 30% of all job openings are listed. Reach out directly to companies or trusted recruiters to uncover hidden openings.

Customize Your CV: Tailor your CV for each application. Highlight relevant skills and achievements to catch recruiters’ attention amidst the flood of applications.

Write a Cover Letter: A well-written cover letter gives a glimpse into your personality and conveys genuine interest in the role.  Use it to make a strong impression.

Without a doubt, job hunting can be tough, but with the right strategy you can significantly improve your chances of success. Keep exploring new opportunities and stay positive. If you encounter setbacks, remember to keep your options open. Think back to when you learned to ride a bike – perseverence and resilience paid off then, even if you encountered a few bumps along the way! Best of luck on your journey!

Every role, no matter how appealing, comes with aspects beyond what meets the eye.
